What is a Paralegal?
As defined by the National Federation of Paralegal Associations, a Paralegal is a person, qualified through education, training or work experience to perform substantive legal work that requires knowledge of legal concepts and is customarily, but not exclusively, performed by a lawyer. This person may be retained or employed by a lawyer, law office, governmental agency or other entity or may be authorized by administrative, statutory or court authority to perform this work. Substantive shall mean work requiring recognition, evaluation, organization, analysis, and communication of relevant facts and legal concepts.
What is a Process Server and/or Constable?
A Process Server is a person, authorized by law and court rules, who serves various types of legal documents such as subpoenas, divorce paperwork, etc. A Constable is a Process Server who may be either elected or appointed, who is required, under his/her commission, to perform the various duties as a Constable when called upon to do so. Such duties include: service of process, enforcement of court orders, etc. Not every Process Server is a Constable, however.
What is a Massachusetts Notary Public?
A Massachusetts Notary Public is a public officer appointed by the Governor, with the advice and consent of his legal council, who may perform the following acts on behalf of the Commonwealth:
Issue Subpoenas;
Issue Summonses;
Administer Oaths/Affirmation;
Take Testimony (Depositions);
Take Affidavits (jurats);
Take Acknowledgments;
Witness Signatures;
Certify Copies of Records;
Protest Negotiable Instruments;
Open Bank Safe Deposit Boxes;
